Devant composer avec une grande économie de moyens, le designer parvient à marier exubérance et intimité, rigueur et convivialité. The Art of Line and Colour Montreal, April 24, 2012 – With its new project situated in Complexe Ste-Julie, The Lounge, designer Jean de Lessard’s firm energizes and clarifies the dim, chaotic space of a bar that has been in existence for more than 20 years. Very economically, the designer successfully weds exuberance and intimacy, clean lines and friendliness + Redynamiser un espace sans personnalité Pour renouveler un espace à la fois exigu et froid, le designer principal Jean de Lessard a opté pour la combinaison d’éléments architecturaux perméables et de couleurs vives dans le style des années 1960. A côté de l’entrée principale, le designer a ainsi composé un coin lounge, servant de point focal, en forme de cube exubérant peint de bandes chromatiques à la Molinari et ouvert sur une salle de quilles grâce à sa cloison vitrée. Les clients de la salle de quille peuvent alors voir l’intérieur de cette « boite » architecturale, rehaussée d’un mobilier fait sur mesure. Ce mobilier, empruntant un langage géométrique très simple à réaliser en atelier ainsi que les matières et les couleurs des années 1960, se retrouve partout à l’intérieur du bar, lui donnant ainsi une signature visuelle attrayante. La loi québécoise sur les loteries et les appareils d’amusement ainsi que la vocation des lieus obligent à abriter du regard externe les espaces de jeu. Pour composer entre perméabilité souhaitable et opacité nécessaire, le designer a donc alterné zones fermées et partitions ajourées, brisant certaines perspectives, tout en en ouvrant d’autres. Les machines à sous ont ainsi été regroupées dans un espace circulaire, tandis que les tables de billard se retrouvaient dans un environnement rectangulaire enveloppés de lattes de bois verticales, disposées de façon irrégulière selon les lignes de perspective recherchées. L’espace se retrouve alors compartimenté, tout en restant ouvert, à l’instar d’un lourd rideau de velours bleu que Jean de Lessard a utilisé comme cloison semi-circulaire pour faire naître un nouveau coin lounge et pour amortir les réverbérations sonores de l’espace. Rendre lisible un espace chaotique Au-delà du jeu entre l’opacité de l’espace intérieur et sa perméabilité avec l’extérieur, il ressort du travail du designer une grande clarté, faisant d’un espace initial chaotique, une composition cohérente et très lisible d’une succession d’alcôves intimistes, d’espaces de rencontre et de zones de jeu. Soucieux d’ouvrir le nouveau bar sur la salle de quille attenante , Jean de Lessard a définit une ligne de perspective forte selon un axe de circulation principal qui forme une diagonale allant de l’entrée au fond du nouvel espace. Cet axe est matérialisé par l’une des cloisons ajourées de la zone billard et du nouveau bar, relocalisé et troquant sa géométrie initiale biscornue contre une forme rectiligne aussi simple qu’efficace. Grâce à la rigueur de l’architecture intérieure, articulée autour du bar et des deux cloisons ajourées de la zone billard, la circulation générale de l’espace apparait avec une netteté évidente. Néanmoins, pour éviter de rendre le lieu impersonnel à force de trop de rigidité géométrique, le designer a su briser le dictat de la ligne droite, pour imposer parfois le cercle, autant dans la forme du mobilier que sa disposition ou l’utilisation d’un rideau semi-circulaire (comme vu précédemment). Malgré de nombreuses contraintes, la firme du designer Jean de Lessard a créé un espace mieux structuré, plus attrayant, plus convivial et qui bénéficie d’une bien meilleure circulation. Beside the main entrance, de Lessard composed a corner lounge to serve as a focal point, in an exuberant cubic shape painted with Molinari-style chromatic stripes and opening onto a bowling alley through its glass wall. Customers in the bowling alley can thus see the inside of this architectural “box,” enhanced with custom furniture. This furniture, using a geometric language and very easy to build, as well as sixties materials and colours, is found throughout the interior of the bar, giving it an attractive visual signature. The Quebec statute on lotteries and amusement machines, as well as the vocation of the premises, require that the gaming spaces be out of sight from the outside. To compromise between the desired permeability and the required opacity, de Lessard alternated closed areas and openwork partitions, breaking up some perspectives and opening others. The slot machines have been grouped in a circular space, whereas the pool tables are found in a rectangular environment enveloped with vertical wood laths arranged irregularly to create the desired lines of perspective. The space is thus compartmentalized while remaining open, thanks to a heavy blue velvet curtain used by de Lessard as a semi-circular partition to form a new corner lounge and deaden the sound reverberations in the space. Making a chaotic space legible Beyond the interplay between the opacity of the interior space and its permeability with the exterior, the designer’s work reveals a great clarity, making a space that was initially chaotic into a coherent and very legible composition of a series of intimate alcoves, areas for encounters, and game zones. Concerned with opening the new bar onto the neighbouring bowling alley, de Lessard defined a strong line of perspective along a main axis of circulation that forms a diagonal from the entrance to the back of the new space. This axis is materialized by one of the openwork partitions between the pool-table area and the new bar, which has been relocated and has traded its original quirky geometry for a rectilinear shape that is both simple and effective. Thanks to the clean lines of the interior architecture, articulated around the bar and the two openwork partitions of the pool-table zone, the general circulation in the space is obvious and clear. Nevertheless, to avoid making the place impersonal due to geometric rigidity, de Lessard broke up the diktat of the straight line by sometimes imposing a circle through the shape and arrangement of the furniture and the use of a semi-circular curtain (as described above). Despite numerous constraints, de Lessard and his design firm have created a space that is better structured, more attractive, and benefits from much better circulation. About Jean de Lessard The Montreal designer Jean de Lessard, with more than 20 years’ experience, has designed numerous interiors, particularly in the commercial and deluxe residential sectors.
