Nature, forêt, pins et bouleaux, sentiers, promenades dans la lande de bruyères, plaines, lisières, clairières, graminées et fleurs de saison, merlons, bosquets. Autant de vocabulaire équestre et paysagé propre au sujet et au contexte singulier de son implantation dans la forêt de Fontainebleau. Comment, dans ce cadre, ne pas inventer une véritable architecture-paysage dont les lignes de partage se fondent et s’embrassent pour ne faire plus qu’un, gage d’une intervention réussie ? Requalification of the Stade équestre du Grand Parquet to Fontainebleau Paris, June 19, 2012 – Horse, display, prestige, arena, track, course, circuit, jumps, hillocks, slopes and mounds, terraces. Nature, forest, pine and birch, footpaths, walks across heathered heathland, plains, forest edge, clearings, grasses and wildflowers, banks, coppice. Such is the vocabulary that inspires this project. Words relating to equestrianism, landscape, and this exceptional location at the heart of the forest of Fontainebleau. Within this context, why not invent a real architecture-landscape, where boundaries between definitions blur and merge to create an appropriate intervention? + Il ne s’agit pas alors d’imposer un geste, mais plutôt de tirer parti des qualités du site, de les révéler et de les mettre en scène dans une attitude douce, souple et opportuniste. Ici, l’intervention s’apparente davantage à un horizon naturel qu’à un bâtiment au sens classique du terme. Elle dissipe et efface les limites d’une enveloppe définie au profit d’une continuité fonctionnelle, conceptuelle et formelle avec l’environnement. Premier acte de ce rapport au paysage, une grande boucle piétonne permet de desservir l’ensemble du site. Cette boucle est une promenade publique ponctuée d’évènements en relation avec les activités équestres et la forêt. Depuis la plaine de l’entrée, elle traverse la zone des exposants, court le long de la zone de détente des chevaux, surplombe le passage des cavaliers, pénètre sous les pins, longe l’attente puis le guet, rejoint les gradines, grimpe doucement sur le toit du bâtiment pour offrir aux promeneurs des vues plongeantes et panoramiques sur les parquets de compétition et redescend par un grand escalier / gradin se connectant avec l’entrée principale. Le long de cette promenade sur le toit, des escaliers permettent de desservir l’ensemble des tribunes et de relier les circulations au sol. Circonscrite en son sein, une clairière sportive regroupe l’ensemble des carrières et des paddocks. Cette clairière – la zone de compétition – appartient à une logique plus globale de ré-identification claire des zones programmatiques. Elle est délimitée au nord par la lisière reconstituée de la forêt formant un fond de scène spectaculaire et au sud, d’est en ouest, par la zone des boxes mobiles et des boxes fixes réaménagée parallèlement au mur d’enceinte, la zone exposants étirée autour de l’entrée et le parking des permanents et officiels. Grand merlon de bois et de fleurs grimpantes, le « bâtiment-paysage » est généré à partir d’un « morphing » – ou modelage – du talutage et s’inscrit ainsi dans les formes préexistantes du domaine. La fusion bâtiment avec gradins, gradins avec gradines, gradines avec talus, talus avec chemins, chemins avec lisière, lisière avec forêt inscrit le bâtiment dans son territoire naturel. Sa façade-versant au nord est montée de gradins de bois en robinier dessinés dans le prolongement des gradines. Ces lignes horizontales continues se poursuivent en arc de cercle à l’est et étreignent le Grand Parquet dans un désir de faire corps avec lui. Au sud, sur l’entrée, dans le prolongement du talus enherbé, un « mur-talus » de plantes grimpantes constitue un filtre solaire et visuel. Le cheminement parcourant le « toit-promenade-ligne de crête » de crête permet d’ancrer le bâtiment dans l’organisation générale du site. Celui-ci devient support du cheminement public. Il apparaît bas pour minimiser l’impact visuel et pour limiter son emprise et son volume global. Sa forme et ses matières naturelles participent à ce désir d’intégration. LE BATIMENT PRINCIPAL ET SON ENVELOPPE La coupe transversale intérieure est dessinée par la pente de la « façade-talus sud », le « toit-promenade-ligne de crête », et la « façade versant nord » découpée par des gradins d’une profondeur de 90cm sur une hauteur de 45cm. Au sud, sur une trame de structure de 2m, une première façade peau assurant l’isolation et l’étanchéité est composée de panneaux de façades standardisés sur huisseries bois permettant un remplissage de bois ou de verre et donc d’organiser des ouvertures en correspondance avec les éléments du programme. La seconde peau est une structure secondaire légère permettant à des grimpants de se développer et assurant une protection solaire en été ainsi que des vues dégagées en hiver. Au nord et sur le toit, les tribunes et le platelage de la promenade en bois de Robinier forment une façade / toiture ventilée posée sur plots au-dessus d’une étanchéité. La trame de 45 verticale des assises dessine le bardage sur toutes les autres faces du projet ; les nez de gradins au nord sont ainsi prolongés par des lames étroites tous les 45 cm dans les passages transversaux et la coursive sud. Si la façade végétale inclinée côté sud permet d’assurer la continuité des buttes engazonnées avec le bâtiment, au nord la continuité avec le paysage est assurée par un vocabulaire de bois (les tribunes et gradines) qui suit progressivement la topographie. LE BATIMENT PRINCIPAL ET SES INTERIEURS A l’intérieur, les espaces de restauration et de travail profitent pour la plupart d’une double exposition. Au nord, des fenêtres disposées en correspondance avec les éléments du programme (commissariat général et affaires équestres) sont conçues permettent de cadrer des vues sur le grand parquet et/ou d’assurer des apports supplémentaires de lumière naturelle. La façade vitrée du restaurant dégage quant à elle un panorama sur le grand parquet et permet en été une connexion directe sur la terrasse. L’ouverture en saillie de la zone du jury assure une relation visuelle privilégiée sur le terrain d’honneur. Le bois est largement présent dans tous les aménagements. La structure bois visible d’épicéa blanchi forme plafond et l’ensemble du cloisonnement, des faux plafonds ponctuels et du mobilier intégré est réalisé en pin blanchi également. ASPECT FONCTIONNEL Le projet intègre un réaménagement total du site (25 hectares), la construction d’un bâtiment principal et de plusieurs équipements annexes. De manière générale, les terrains ont été légèrement remaniés et toutes la zone de boxes et de parking entièrement refaite. L’ensemble des flux piétons, véhicules et cavaliers et repensée de manière à éviter le plus possible les croisements (création de passerelles au-dessus de cheminements chevaux, doublage des circulations, etc). Le bâtiment principal Le parti fonctionnel du bâtiment est celui d’une forte lisibilité des trois entités programmatiques décrit par la maîtrise d’ouvrage : 1-Une entité publique composée par le restaurant, la cuisine et les sanitaires publics; 2-Une entité correspondant au commissariat général (salles de réunions, commissariat et jury /presse); 3-Une entité pour le centre des affaires équestres (bureaux permanents,…) plus ateliers. Le projet est divisé en trois blocs distincts, autonomes et accessibles directement depuis l’extérieur. Deux grands passages sont aménagés depuis la zone d’entrée vers les tribunes entre ces différents blocs programmatique. Cette autonomie de chacune des entités permet une fonctionnalité à géométrie variable en adéquation avec le fonctionnement du site. Ces entités sont regroupées dans une enveloppe commune et reliées par une coursive côté façade sud qui donne au bâtiment un aspect cohérent et compact. Le programme est disposé sur un seul niveau pour des raisons de simplicités fonctionnelles, d’accessibilité et de lisibilité de l’organisation des zones. Le restaurant est positionné à l’ouest du bâtiment et profite d’une position stratégique située à l’articulation entre l’entrée principale du public sur le site du village exposant et la boucle de circulation piétonne desservant l’ensemble du site. Le commissariat général est positionné au centre du bâtiment profitant d’un point d’observation sur le grand parquet et d’une accessibilité directe depuis la zone de parking des officiels, exposants et permanents. Le centre des affaires équestres est quant à lui implanté à l’ouest et dispose lui aussi d’une accessibilité directe depuis la zone de parking des permanents. Il intègre une plateforme de livraison pour les ateliers à l’est qui se connecte avec le circuit technique desservant le local de stockage situé au nord du grand parquet. Les gradines Les gradines Est sont construites dans la continuité des tribunes. Elles sont en bois (robinier) sur structure acier. Hauteur 0.45m et profondeur 0.90m. La surface calculée pour le projet est de l'ordre de 1000m² Les passerelles Deux passerelles et acier et bois (bardage identique à celui du bâtiment) sont construites le long de la promenade piétonne. Elles sont suffisamment hautes (3.40m sous face) pour ne pas gêner les chevaux et suffisamment larges pour permettre aux visiteurs de regarder les passages. Une des deux passerelles est accessible aux engins de – de 3.5T dans le cadre des aménagements et de l’entretien du site. Les boxes et les parkings L'implantation des boxes en dur (bois) se fait le long du mur principal dans la continuité des boxes existants. Des grandes surfaces sont prévues pour l’implantation de boxes démontables. Ces surfaces en dur sont entrecoupées de grandes zones boisées permettant de réduire l’effet de masse. Elles serviront par ailleurs à créer des lieux de détente pour les membres des équipes sportives autour des parkings une fois les arbres devenus adultes. 130 places de poids lourds sont par ailleurs réparties proches des zones de boxes. Les sanitaires enterrés Un bloc sanitaire enterré est prévu sous une des piles de la passerelle au nord de la zone des boxes démontables. C'est un ouvrage maçonné directement accessible depuis la zone des boxes. Il est ouvert aux cavaliers et au public. Cet ouvrage intégré au paysage évite l’effet de mitage du site. Les sanitaires et douches accueil (entrée cavaliers) Un bloc sanitaire-douches pour les équipes des cavaliers est prévu à gauche de l'entrée des cavaliers. C'est une construction bois similaire à celle des boxes fixes. Alignée le long du mur classé, cette construction fait le symétrique des boxes fixes par rapport à l'entrée marquant ainsi l'accès au site A côté de ce bloc sont placés le pailler (existant déplacé) et une zone de bennes. Les guérîtes d’accueil Les guérîtes d’accueil en bois sont placées au droit des entrées cavaliers et piéton. Abri de stockage L'abri de stockage est resitué sur l’ancien emplacement de la zone de stockage à l'air libre. Sa surface est de l'ordre de 600m² (dont 450 couverts). Afin de minimiser l'impact visuel de cet abri, les merlons périphériques de la zone ont été légèrement surhaussés et la toiture est végétalisée. De loin la surface de la toiture disparait dans le paysage. Ils soutiennent respectivement leur diplôme d’architecture (D.P.L.G.) en 2001 et 2000 et exercent jusqu’en 2006-2007 dans des agences et institutions françaises et étrangères de renommée internationale. A eux deux, ils ont participé à l’élaboration de multiples projets notamment aux Ateliers Jean Nouvel, chez Renzo Piano, Jacques Ferrier et au sein des Services Economiques des Ambassades de France dans divers pays d’Afrique. Ces années de formation sont jalonnées par de nombreux voyages autour du monde. L’un partira pour de longs séjours au Canada, en Afrique, en Amérique du Sud et Centrale, l’autre sillonnera l’Asie, chacun ayant traversé l’Europe. En 2003, déjà entrés dans la vie professionnelle, ils décident de travailler ensemble sous le nom d’architecture-system. Entre 2003-2006, en parallèle de leur activité en agence, les deux associés planchent sur un certain nombre de concours d’idées internationaux et de petits projets individuels. Cette période sera consacrée par l’obtention des Nouveaux Albums de la Jeune Architecture 2005-2006 (NAJA), nomination du Ministère de la Culture récompensant une vingtaine d’agences d’architectes européens de moins de 35 ans pour la qualité de leur travail et leur potentiel d’avenir. Suite à cette nomination, ils fondent la SARL JOLY&LOIRET, Agence d’architecture. Depuis lors, l’agence compte entre 6 et 10 personnes. La production s’est diversifiée pour la maîtrise d’ouvrage publique et privée dans le domaine des équipements publics (sportif, culturel, scolaire notamment), de la scénographie, du logement et des bureaux. En 2010, l’agence est sélectionnée pour le PRIX DE LA PREMIERE OEUVRE 2010, Prix des Editions du Moniteur, pour le projet «Les Ganivelles» (Fédération Française de Surf et restaurant gastronomique à Hossegor) et est récompensée du PRIX AGORA encouragements, meilleur équipement public en projet, Ville de Bordeaux, pour le projet «Les 3 Mondes, groupe scolaire de la Berge du Lac» Paul-Emmanuel Loiret et Serge Joly enseignent par ailleurs en Ecole Supérieure d’Architecture. Une démarche créative à fort ancrage environnemental Au fil de leurs voyages, Paul-Emmanuel Loiret et Serge Joly se sont forgés une démarche architecturale et environnementale élargie et une sensibilité accrue aux architectures simples, vernaculaires, issues des cultures et des contextes locaux. Leur objectif est aujourd’hui de mettre en œuvre une architecture qui soit environnementalement juste et culturellement représentative. A la manière de paysagistes ou d’artistes Land-Art, les projets de l’agence, dépassant le lien essentiel à la fonction, à la culture, sont déterminés par l’esprit du lieu, son histoire, ses formes, ses matières et ses textures afin de s’inscrire dans l’espace à l’échelle du paysage. Chaque projet, conçu dans un souci d’économie de matière et d’énergie, révèle et reflète ainsi son territoire, comme s’il en était une résurgence naturelle. The intervention that results is closer to a continuity of the natural landscape than a building in the usual sense of the word. The edges of the project envelope are undefined, allowing a functional, conceptual and formal continuity of space. A key part of this relationship with the landscape is a pedestrian circuit leading around the whole of the site. This circuit is a public walkway, punctuated with elements of both the equestrian centre and the forest. Beginning at the entrance, the pathway crosses the exhibitors area, runs the length of the horses rest area, passes on a footbridge above riders on horseback, dips under the pine trees, runs alongside the collecting ring then the water jump, falls in line with the terraces, before climbing gently up to the top of the roof of the building, giving visitors plunging panoramic views over the arenas. Descending from the roof, this boardwalk becomes a grand staircase that steps down through the levels of wooden terraces returning the visitor to the main entrance at the bottom. Staircases at regular intervals along the rooftop boardwalk give access to the stands and link to ground level circulation. This pedestrian circuit creates a loop around all of the Grand Parquet’s paddocks and sand arenas, collecting them together in a sort of forest clearing dedicated to sport. The creation of this clearing - the competition area - is part of the overarching aim to redefine the various programmatic zones of this equestrian centre. It is bordered to the north by the (replanted) edge of the forest, creating a spectacular backdrop. To the south and from east to west, the area of mobile and permanent horse stalls has been reconfigured to run parallel to the edge of the site, and the exhibitors area has moved nearer to the entrance and the parking for staff and officials. A giant bank of wood and climbing flowers, the « landscape-building » has been generated by the ‘morphing’ - or modelling - of an embankment, and so fits within the pre-existing forms of this site. The fusion of building with tiered seating, tiered seating with terrace, terrace with embankment, embankment with path, path with forest edge, forest edge with forest, positions the building firmly in its natural setting. The north side is set with tiered seating made of black locust wood, which extends the lines of the terraces. These strong horizontals continue in an arc to the east, hugging the edge of the main arena. To the south, at the entrance, a sloping wall of climbing plants - a direct continuation of the grass slopes to either side - creates a visual and solar screen for the building behind. Running the pedestrian walkway across the highest point of this roof anchors the building firmly within the spatial organisation of the site. It becomes a support for the flow of visitors. Its low-lying shape minimises visual impact and limits any dominance its volume might otherwise have had. The building’s shape and the use of materials are also part of this desire to integrate the project into its surroundings. THE MAIN BUILDING: THE BUILDING ENVELOPE The building section takes its shape from the angle of the south facing sloped façade, the line of the rooftop boardwalk and the north facing side cut into by its tiered seating (Depth 90cm, height 45cm). On the building’s south side, a 2m grid provides the framework for the first layer of façade. Standardised façade panels of either wood or glass are slotted into a wooden structural frame, providing insulation and waterproofing. The second façade is a layer of lightweight screen to support climbing plants that will grow up to provide solar screening in summer and die back revealing views outside in winter. On the north side of the building and on the roof, the terraced seating and the black locust wood boardwalk decking create the façade/ roof (ventilated, on blocks, on waterproofing). The 45cm vertical measure of the seating, is found in the design of wooden boarded sections throughout the project; for example the ends of the tiered seating to the north are visually extended into the passages that run through the building and in the covered walkway along the south façade. In the same way that the sloping planted façade on the south side of the building flows directly out of the sloped grass bank next to it, so, to the north, this continuity is achieved with the use of wood (the stands and the tiered seating) gradually following the topography. MAIN BUILDING: INTERIOR Inside, most of the restaurant and work spaces benefit from dual orientation. On the north side, windows for the rooms occupied by event officials and venue management have been conceived to frame views of the ‘grand parquet’ arena and/or to bring in additional natural daylighting. The glazed façade of the restaurant reveals a panorama of the grand parquet and in the summer, opens directly onto the exterior terrace. The judges room projects forward giving them a privileged view over the arena. Wood dominates as a material. The visible wooden structure in white spruce creates the ceiling and partitioning, whilst suspended ceilings and built in furniture are made of white pine. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project comprises a total redevelopment of the site (25 hectares), the construction of a new main building, and a number of ancillary buildings. Generally, the site has been lightly re-landscaped whilst the stabling and parking areas are completely rebuilt. Routes for pedestrian visitors, vehicles and riders have been entirely reorganised in order to separate them as much as possible (creating footbridges that cross above routes for horses and jockeys, double circulation etc) Main building The main building is divided into 3 clearly defined functional areas, as requested by the client : 1-A public area comprising restaurant, kitchens and public toilets ; 2-An area for competition officials and event organisers (meeting rooms, judges area, press room) ; 3- The equestrian centre’s offices and workshops. The project divides the building into three distinct areas, each is autonomous with its own discreet entrance. These three areas are separated by two large passages that lead through the building from the entrance zone towards the stands. The autonomy of these three spaces allows the site to flexibly accommodate a variety of uses. These separate entities are grouped together inside the envelope of the main building and are linked by the covered walkway running along the south side of the building, giving the building a coherence and compact aspect. All spaces are on one floor level for reasons of functional simplicity, accessibility and legibility. The restaurant is on the west side of the building occupying a strategic position where the pedestrian circuit around the site meets the exhibitors’ area. Facilities for event officials and organisers are at the centre of the building. These spaces benefit from an excellent view over the arena and easy access from the parking area for staff, officials and exhibitors. The equestrian centre at the buildings’ eastern end, is also easily accessed from the staff parking area. It includes a delivery depot for the centre’s workshops, that links via a service road to the store to the north of the arena. The terraces The eastern terraces are designed to read as a continuation of the grandstand. They are made of wood (black locust) on an aluminium frame. Height: 0.45m, Depth: 0.90m. Total area: around 1000m2 The footbridges Two footbridges in steel and wood (identical decking to that on the building) feature as part of the pedestrian circuit. They are placed sufficiently high (3.40m clearance) to not bother horses passing underneath and are wide enough to allow visitors to stop and look down onto the path below. One of the footbridges is also accessible to service and maintenance vehicles of less than 3.5T. Stabling and parking New permanent stabling (in wood) runs parallel to the perimeter wall, a direct continuation of pre-existing stables on the site. Large open areas to accommodate temporary horse boxes have also been created. These are interspersed with generous wooded areas to break up their mass. As the trees mature, these wooded areas can also be used for rest and relaxation by visiting competitors and their teams. 130 parking spaces for large vehicles/trucks have also been created near to the stabling. Underground toilet block A ‘buried’ toilet block is planned beneath the supports of the footbridge to the north of the zone for horse boxes and temporary stabling. Made of masonry, it will be directly accessible from the stables, for both jockeys and members of the public. The idea is to hide it in the landscape to avoid adding extra structures to the site. Washrooms and showers (competitors entrance) Washrooms and a shower block for the jockeys will be located to the left of the competitors’ entrance. This will be a wooden building similar in design to the permanent stables. Aligned to the (protected) boundary wall, this new construction will mark one side of the entrance to the site, with the stables symmetrically marking the other. Next to this building will be a straw loft (existing, moved here) and an area for refuse. Entrance kiosks Wooden entrance kiosks are located to the right of the competitors’ entrance and pedestrian’s entrance. Store The store is on the site of a former open-air storage area. It is approximately 600m2 (of which 450m2 covered). To minimise the impact of this building, the surrounding grass banks have been slightly raised and a green roof added. Completing their diplomas in 2001 and 2000 respectively, until 2006-7 they worked in French and foreign architectural practices of international renown, notably at Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano, Jacques Ferrier and for the Services Economiques des Ambassades de France in various countries in Africa. These years of training were also marked by opportunities for travel around the world. One spent time in Canada, Africa, south and central America, the other criss-crossing Asia, both having travelled throughout Europe. In 2003, having already embarked upon their professional careers, they decided to work together under the name ‘architecture system’. Between 2003-6, in parallel with their work for other architects, they participated in a number of international architecture competitions and undertook small private projects. They were awarded the prestigious nomination by the French Ministry of Culture to the ‘Nouveaux Albums de la Jeune Architecture’ for 2005-6; a prize given to 20 architectural practices aged under 35 in recognition of their work and their potential for the future. Following this award, they founded JOLY&LOIRET. Since then, the office has had between 6 and 8 employees. Work has diversified both in the public and private sector, notably for schools, sporting and cultural public commissions, but also in exhibition design, housing and offices. In 2010, Joly&Loiret were shortlisted for the PRIX DE LA PREMIERE OEUVRE 2010, a prize awarded by the publishers MONITEUR, for their project ‘Les Ganivelles” (HQ for the French Surfing Federation and a new gastronomic restaurant in Hossegor), and received a commendation for the category, Best public project, City of Bordeaux at the PRIX AGORA, for their project “Les 3 mondes, Berge du Lac school) Paul-Emmanuel Loiret and Serge Joly also teach at various Ecoles Supérieure d’Architecture. A creative approach rooted in environmental context Over time, Paul-Emmanuel Loiret and Serge Joly have forged a broad architectural and environmental approach with a sensitivity towards a simple, vernacular architecture, informed by local cultures and contexts. Today their objective is to create an architecture that is environmentally respectful and culturally representative. In the manner of a landscape designer or land artist, the office’s projects are more than simply functional. They are cultural, determined by a sense of place, its history, its form, its materials and its textures with the aim of creating a space to fit the local context. Each project, conceived with respect for the use of energy and resources, reveals and reflects its environs, as if it had risen from nature. Most importantly, the office’s projects aspire to be sensitive, efficient, dynamic, sustainable, appropriate and alive, to be poetic, to touch the people who use them. Far from having a formal ideology, Joly&Loiret strive to build an architecture that is concerned not with its own singular presence, but with the actions and events that it might engender.
