Montréal, le 9 octobre 2009 – En marge des hauts lieux de l’histoire et des projets de construction vedettes, notre paysage urbain regorge de petits trésors d’architecture et de maisons d’exception aux secrets jalousement gardés. Pour son livre Visites privées – Intérieurs québécois d’exception, la journaliste Marie-France Léger a convaincu quinze propriétaires de lui ouvrir leur porte et de la laisser se promener dans leur univers et leur intimité.

Montréal, le 7 octobre 2009 – Dans les Laurentides, une forêt dense sur un coteau léger, en contre-bas l’élargissement d’une petite rivière. A travers les arbres, un corps de bâtiment noir scindé en trois blocs reliés entre eux par des passages vitrés. Trois blocs de logis, à mi-niveau les uns des autres, tous en contact direct avec le sol. Trois blocs à l’identité propre, offrant intimité entre les parties et ouverture sur la nature :
-un bloc d’entrée, ouvert sur deux niveaux et regroupant les chambres des adolescents et la salle familiale.
-un bloc séjour, espace central, convivial, ouvert sur la terrasse.
-un bloc privé, la suite des propriétaires, isolée du reste du logis.

Montreal, October 7th 2009 – In the Laurentians, a dense forest on a slight hill, down-turns into the expansion of a small river. Through the trees, the body of a black building is divided into three blocks linked by glass passageways. Three blocks of a home, mid-level from each other, are all in direct contact with the earth. Three blocks of proper identity, offering intimacy between each and open to nature:
- An entry block, open on two levels and includes the adolescents quarters and family room.
- A daytime block, central space, friendly, opens onto the terrace.
- A private block, owners suite, isolated from the rest of the home.

Designed by the integrated design consortium of Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects (Toronto), Smith Carter Architects (Winnipeg) Transsolar KlimaEngineering (Stuttgart), the tower has already gained attention with the prestigious “Best Tall Building in North America” award that is granted by the CTBUH (Council for Tall Buildings), the world’s leading body dedicated to the field of tall buildings and urban habitat. In October, Manitoba Hydro Place will also go on to contend for the “Best in the World” prize. Already generating international interest, the project has appeared in the Princeton University Press, the Architectural Press, and various other journals in Europe and Asia.

D’audace ce bâtiment ne manque pas. Il suffit pour s’en convaincre de prendre la seconde à gauche en descendant l’avenue de Longchamp depuis la station les Côteaux à Saint-Cloud. A peine a-t-on laissé une paisible enfilade de maisons bourgeoises et cossues, tranquilles héritères d’une tradition francilienne de meulières-péronsplatanes, que l’on tombe nez-à-nez avec un drôle de bâtiment, à la fois massif et enfantin, cubiste plus que cubique, définitivement «flashy», convoquant le souvenir heureux du jouet pour enfants.

This building is not lacking in selfconfidence. As proof, you only have to take the second left along the Avenue de Longchamps from the Les Côteaux tramway Station in Saint-Cloud. No sooner have you left behind a quiet row of smart private houses in the traditional millstone grit Parisian style with front steps and plane trees than you come face to face with an odd-looking building, imposing but also childishly simple, more cubist than cube-shaped, decidedly “flashy”, evoking happy memories of a child’s toy.
